SCENE: Costcutters

REPORTS of gun shots led to armed police sealing off streets on Friday night.

The shots were allegedly fired by an air rifle in the direction of an Dumbarton Costcutters store, which was open at the time.

Customers were caught up in the drama and were ordered to remain in the shop while police surrounded a nearby tenement block in Barwood Hill, Bellsmyre.

The area was closed off for around two hours while a helicopter hovered above and specialist officers scoured the scene.

Members of the public had contacted police about the alleged shooting near Merkins Avenue.

Police confirmed a 24-year-old Alexandria man was later arrested and has been charged with culpable and reckless conduct by the reckless discharge of an air rifle.
