SIR Jackie Stewart was in Dumbarton Library to open a new children's section as part of its centenary celebrations.
Unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion Sir Jackie said: "This library is one hundred-years-old.
"There is hardly a town in all of Scotland that does not have a library and that was put together in most cases by Andrew Carnegie.
"What a wealth he gave to Scotland."
He added: "Reading is one of the most absolute gifts that you have been given.
"You will learn more from reading than anything else.
"Come and use this library.
"It is really nice for me to come back and be invited to this library since I left school more than ten years ago.
"I am pleased to be here and I am pleased to be invited and I hope you will be overloaded with young people wanting to come and make the most of the benefits of the library.
"I was given some books by one of the curators of the Museum of Scotland.
"Part of his life is publishing and his mother, who was a dyslexic teacher, started a publishing company for people with dyslexia.
"I thought it would be really nice for me to be able to bring with me some of these books - they are specially for people with dyslexia."
