A TOURIST’S five-year battle to get ‘Welcome to Dumbarton’ signposts on the A82 may finally be over.

Robin Bryer, 66, who himself works in Chartered Town and Country Planning, travels through Dumbarton twice a month between March and October.

His campaign began in 2005 after becoming frustrated that although the small village of Milton has a signpost, Dumbarton does not.

Following numerous letters to West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC), Robin, from Dorset, finally received confirmation in June last year that signage would be erected in July or August 2009.

However, a year on, no signs have been has been erected.

Robin said: “Dumbarton must surely be the only settlement of any substance in Britain which does not identify itself on its main through route, it really is quite extraordinary.”

But when the Reporter contact WDC, it was confirmed that signage would be put in place within the next six weeks.

Welcoming the news, Robin said: “It has been a long time coming and when the signs are erected they will make a big difference to tourism in Dumbarton.

“It will be useful in regards to promoting the town as well as helping the motorist.”
