A BAYING mob of residents forced police to remove axe killer Thomas McCulloch from his new Dumbarton home last night (Wednesday).

And once the Carstairs murderer had been escorted from the premises the angry group staged an all-night vigil to prevent his return.

The 60-year-old first arrived at the town's Strathclyde Road around 2.30pm with two social workers and there was already a crowd of 30 people waiting for him.

Taunts of "don't come back" and "you're not welcome" were simply met by a smirk from the killer.

One angry onlooker told the Reporter: "As soon as McCulloch appeared everyone was hurling abuse at him because we just don't want him here.

"But he just sat in the police car smiling throughout - it makes me sick.

"Six police officers had to escort him in to the premises because everyone was trying to get at him." McCulloch left the house under escort later in the afternoon but returned around 8.45pm.

A witness said: "He came strolling down the middle of the street right into the crowd with not a care in the world."

Furious neighbours spat on him and somebody had sabotaged the the locks with superglue to prevent him getting in to the property.

Stones were also thrown at the windows of the house - usually used as homeless accommodation - and banners were put up, one saying 'NO AXEMAN KILLERS HERE'.

After McCulloch was unable to get into the property he was taken away in a police car.

It is not believed he has since returned and the windows of the property were boarded up to prevent further damage.

A 44-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were arrested for allegedly breaching the peace during the stand-off.

McCulloch and gay lover Robert Mone butchered a Carstairs nurse, a patient and a young policeman who had six children during an escape from Carstairs in 1976.

McCulloch had been sent there six years earlier for trying to kill two hotel workers over the lack of butter on his roll.
