Since the announcement last week, there has been widespread praise of the decision to bring the Baton to no fewer than 16 towns across Dumbarton, the Vale and Clydebank.

Dumbarton, Renton, Alexandria, Balloch, Jamestown, Bonhill, and Milton will all play a major part in the route, which is expected to be televised to millions across the world.

The area’s MSP, Jackie Baillie said of the news: “I am delighted the Baton will pass through Dumbarton and the Vale. People came out in their thousands to see the Olympic torch when it passed through in 2012 and I hope we can recreate the same carnival atmosphere when the Baton comes here on July 18.” And West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) have confirmed there is to be a packed programme of events to welcome the relay to the area, as the countdown begins to Scotland’s biggest-ever sporting and cultural festival.

Councillor David McBride, convener of neighbourhood services, said plans were in place for events along the entire length of the route to showcase the ‘stunning landmarks, scenery and communities’ in the area.

His vice convener, Lawrence O’Neill told the Reporter: “Our staff and partners have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure July 18 is going to be a day to remember. Glasgow 2014 is the biggest sporting event our country has ever seen and we are delighted to be part of it.” The baton will visit over 400 communities across the country, reflecting the important role sport has to play in Scotland, and encourage more people participating in sport.

Of the announcement, West of Scotland MSP, Stuart McMillan said: “I’m delighted the Queen’s Baton Relay will be visiting Dumbarton and the Vale. It’s a great tradition and symbolises the coming together of nations and territories in advance of the sporting games.

“With the previous interest in the Olympic torch, I’m sure the Baton will receive an equally high interest and allow the Dumbarton and Vale to show its support for the Games.” Baton bearers will be announced on March 31 and will lead the procession through 400 Scottish communities over 40 days – it is expected there will be a number of West Dunbartonshire bearers.

Ms Baillie added: “It’s important people in Dumbarton, Alexandria and Balloch can join in the celebrations, so I would encourage residents to come out and show their support for the local baton bearers.” Other towns in West Dunbartonshire to be part of the celebrations include Duntocher, Faifley, Hardgate, Whitecrook, Clydebank, Dalmuir, Old Kilpatrick, and Bowling.

Further highlights of the baton’s journey through West Dunbartonshire as well as full details of the route and events planned will be announced nearer the time.
