Both VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay and minister for External Affairs and International Development, Humza Yousaf attended the ceremony Muir Woods in Martinez to commemorate the Scottish-born “Father of the National Parks”.

The new trail from Dunbar to Helensburgh via Balloch, mirrors John Muir’s own personal journey growing up in the east coast town before travelling to the west coast, where he set sail for life in America. The 215 km route has been designed to take in castles, historic towns and villages, stunning coastal scenery as well as Scotland’s first national park, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

From last Thursday (April 17) until Sunday (April 26) the inaugural John Muir Festival is also being held — with various events organised throughout the country including the grand finale on Loch Lomond Shores.

The festival and opening of the trail ties in with the 175th anniversary of John Muir’s birth in 2013 and the 100th anniversary of his death in April 2014.
