Management at the Balloch shopping centre took to social media to highlight the problem, after three wheelchairs were stolen on Monday, May 26. They were found burnt out on Tuesday morning.

Their story amassed a huge amount of online support, with the Reporter and the Paisley Mobility Centre coming to their aid.

Staff posted on Facebook: “Sadly our three wheelchairs that we give freely to our visitors were stolen and burned last night. We are trying to get these replaced as they are used so much... just in case anyone has one in their garage that is in good condition and looking for a home, then please let us know.” The Reporter spoke with centre manager, Clare Gemmel on Thursday who described her overwhelming gratitude. She said: “The wheelchairs are not tied up because they are for people to use on site as and when they are needed.

HONEST “They can be used inside and people are usually very honest about using them.

“In fact, they are really, really well used so we were distraught when we realised they weren’t in the correct place. It’s so lovely that people were so kind and so thoughtful to come and donate to us.

“Now we’re all ready to go again.” Emma Quigley, Reporter editor, said: “We were saddened to hear what had happened to the wheelchairs at Loch Lomond Shores and we happened to have one in the office, which was donated by a member of staff. We were more than happy to donate it and see it put to good use by visitors to the centre.” Owner of the Paisley Mobility centre, Nick Young said he was “happy to help” and said he became aware of the situation on social media.

He added: “We have quite a few wheelchairs and some we don’t really need, so we were happy to donate. They seemed very appreciative of it, but it was easy for us.

“It’s a shame though that people have done this. I’m not a frequent visitor, but I have been to Loch Lomond Shores and it’s a great service. You never know when they’re going to be needed.” Staff reported the matter to police with both checking the centre’s CCTV to try and source who took the wheelchairs – however, security cameras were not covering the area at the time.
