Robert McEwan duped the DWP out of the money over a 19-month period ending in February this year.

Appearing at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last Tuesday, McEwan, of Tullichewan Crescent, admitted claiming £4,962.22 he was not entitled to.

The 43-year-old was claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance whilst in full-time work — he had told the DWP he was not working.

Tom Brown, defending, told the court his client had agreed a repayment scheme with the DWP and had started to pay back some of his debt. He had also paid a lump sum towards the amount.

Sentence was deferred on the first time offender until August 12 for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report.
