The green, white, black and red flag was unfurled in the centre of Dumbarton earlier this month.

He told the Reporter: “I’m very proud that we were the first local authority in the country to do this. I now see that Glasgow and Fife councils are flying the flag in support and hopefully, one-by-one, other councils will do the same.

“It’s great that a small local authority like us has led the way. If more do it, then I think we will review our stance on the decision and would look at putting the flag up again.” The Provost said the council had received a lot of messages from people reacting to the move, mostly positive. However, he did acknowledged there had been a number of negative comments about it.

He added: “We tried to answer all of these comments and explain our reasoning behind it, and most people appreciated those reasons.

“I said we would fly the flag for seven days and that’s what we did, but we have had many ask us to keep it up for longer.”
