West Dunbartonshire Council has joined 26 other local authorities in barring official referendum campaigners from its schools.

While access to Yes Scotland and Better Together campaigners will be restricted, debate will still be allowed with pupils able to talk about the referendum in school.

For the first time in the UK, 16 and 17-year-olds in Scotland will be eligible to vote.

The announcement came on Friday, the first day of purdah which curbs what public bodies can do during election periods.

As a result local authorities and central government are restricted on what new projects they can announce and legislate on in the lead up to the referendum on September 18 for fear of influencing the way people vote.

A council spokeswoman told the Reproter: “The two groups cannot visit during the purdah period.” What do you think?

Should pupils be allowed to ask questions of campaigners in schools?
