And the Labour man thinks we will know the result here when one side gets to 30,00 votes.

Councillor Rooney was talking to the Reporter as he stood on the doorsteps of the Vale of Leven Swimming centre in Alexandria. Shortly after the Reporter were asked to leave the grounds by the presiding officer.

Before that though, we asked Councillor Rooney which side he thought would prevail in the region.

After a quick hesitation, he told us: “Nationally I think No will prevail, but locally it's very close. I have a suspicion Yes could win it here – but I still believe our voters will vote No.” The council leader also told us how he thought the figures would pan out for the day.

He told us: "We are suggesting a turnout of around 85 per cent in West Dunbartonshire and of that I think it's who gets 30,000 votes first," adding that he thought that would be the “mark” in West Dunbartonshire.

The councillor said it was incredibly close in who would make it to that mark first.

He added: “We have seen the largest number of postal votes ever and today we have seen all the people coming out to vote. We have had a really high turnout here this morning already and some of the polling stations had queues.

“It's unusual so early on in the day to have that – but it's all very positive, there's no animosity."
