EMERGENCY services are investigating a blaze at the offices of the Labour party in Dumbarton.

Police Scotland are working with the fire brigade to determine whether the fire was deliberately set.

Two fire engines attended the scene at the Broadmeadow Industrial Estate on Sunday night after reports of the blaze were made.

That saw emergency services attend the single storey property at around 9.50pm.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service: “We received several 999 calls reporting a fire at a dance studio on Poplar Road around 9:45pm.

“Two crews were immediately mobilised from Dumbarton Community Fire Station and firefighters reached the scene within five minutes.

“They arrived to find a single storey building on fire and tackled the flames using a main jet.” Labour Party officials were made aware of the fire on Sunday night.

Duncan Robinson, Dumbarton Labour party secretary, told us: “The scene is still being investigated by fire and police, so we don’t know the level of damage yet.

“I got a call last night (Sunday) telling me about it because, apparently, there was a lot of flames and smoke coming from the building. I haven’t heard anything as to the cause.” Some people took to social media on Monday suggesting the building had been broken into with a number of fires deliberately set — police were unable to confirm this with the Reporter before we went to print.

Mr Robinson would not be drawn as to whether the fire was either related or merely a coincidence after a weekend of independence referendum releated disturbances elsewhere, saying he was not aware of rumours as to the cause.

Whilst police have as of yet been unable to determine whether the fire was caused deliberately, it comes after a weekend of disruption post Scotland’s independence referendum.

In Glasgow, police were forced to intervene after trouble flared in the city centre.

Now specialist fire investigation officers from Edinburgh will work closely with Police Scotland to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire in Dumbarton, with arrests expected if the fire was found to be deliberately started.

A police spokeswoman told the Reporter: “Police are treating the fire at the Broadmeadown Industrial Park as suspicious.

“The building was substantially damaged and inquiries are ongoing. There is nothing to suggest yet that the incident was targeted because of the independence referendum.

“Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101.”
