Peter Moore, 28, was sentenced to a minimum of 18-and-a-half years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday for stabbing younger brother Derek to death during a fight at their mother’s flat.

The convicted murderer was back in the dock a matter of days later when he appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court today (Tuesday) to be sentenced for shoplifting offences.

Explaining Moore’s circumstances to the court, his solicitor made the revelation that he could well appeal the length of the prison term handed down to him at the High Court in Glasgow by Judge Lady Wolffe.

Moore, who lived at an address in O’Hare in Bonhill, admitted killing his 25-year-old brother at their mother’s flat in Govan but denied murdering him. Moore didn’t give evidence during the murder trial but the jury rejected his defence of self-defence.

The younger man sustained 70 injuries including four stab wounds during the fatal attack.

Moore was back in court as he was due to be sentenced for two thefts which occurred on June 19 last year, around six months before he killed his sibling on January 3 this year.

During an earlier court appearance Moore had admitted stealing a fishing rod worth £64.99 from Cash Generator and a quantity of clothing from New Look, both in College Way in Dumbarton town centre. The clothing was valued at £229.98.

Defence agent Mary Moultrie revealed that Moore could be set to appeal the murder sentence, saying: “These matters have gone on for quite some time and Mr Moore was remanded for a total of 62 days from June until August.

"He has since been convicted of a murder charge and is to serve a minimum of 18-and-a-half years. There may well be an appeal, not against the conviction but the sentencing.

"Clearly the matters he appears here for today have been superseded by other events.” Sheriff David Clapham said: “Mr Moore I’ve listened carefully to your solicitor and took account the you were remanded for 62 days. That is the equivalent of a four months sentence.

"Given what has since happened in the High Court you are admonished and dismissed.”
