Dozens of jobs at the Dumbarton branch of the DIY paint and tool superstore could be under threat after Homebase’s parent company made the announcement last week.

Thousands of staff are set to go across the UK after parent company Home Retail Group admitted that one out of four of their stores will close over the next few years.

The company revealed back in 2012 that they were preparing to close a number of their stores.

However, when contacted by the Reporter they were unwilling to comment on the fate of the Dumbarton store or any individual store, or say exactly how many jobs are set to go.

Seven stores have already closed this year and the company will accelerate the closure of up to one in four of their remaining stores by 2019.

The store at St James’ Retail Park in Dumbarton is one of more than 320 Homebase stores currently in operation throughout the UK.

Home Retail Group also owns Argos, Habitat and provides financial services for shoppers in the form of store cards for Argos and Homebase.

The retail group revealed that efforts will be made to redeploy staff to other stores wherever possible and that retailers taking up leases currently held by Homebase would be encouraged to offer Homebase staff positions with them.

The statement which fails to reveal which stores face the axe, leaves dozens of staff at the Dumbarton store with an uncertain future.

A spokesperson told the Reporter: “Home Retail Group has announced a three-year plan for Homebase to revitalise the business for the future.

“Part of the plan will be to right-size the store estate through scheduled lease expiries and a series of sales to other retailers.

“Once they are identified, our colleagues will be the first to be informed about any of the affected stores, and where possible we will redeploy colleagues to other stores within the Group, or encourage retailers buying our leases to offer roles within their businesses locally.

“These changes are necessary to make Homebase a stronger business for the future.”
