Scott McWatt wrote Glasgow (Your Heart is Made Of Gold) in the aftermath of the tragedy to help families deal with the financial impact of the accident.

Jack Sweeney, his wife Lorraine and their grandaughter Erin McQuade, 18, all from Dumbarton, were killed when a bin lorry lost control in Glasgow’s George Square, killing six people and injuring 10 more.

Dumbarton-raised Scott, who lived on Crosslet Place before moving to the city, told the Reporter: “Being from Dumbarton and living in Glasgow in the aftermath of the accident I felt I had to do something to help. I spent Christmas in Dumbarton, and it’s such a small community, but they really rallied around the McQuades and the Sweeneys.

“The accident was so unfortunate, it could’ve been anyone on that street. You really count your blessings after these things. You take a look at your own family and it makes you appreciate what you have.” A number of high profile names have backed Scott’s single including First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.: “It’s really nice that Nicola Sturgeon has got behind the single. A lot of high profile people have been offering their support on Twitter. That shows something, Scotland still has a working class environment and we back our own. There’s a sense of community no matter who you are.” He added: “I started playing music and writing songs when I was quite young. I taught myself piano and guitar and kept going. I gradually progressed through bands, I used to play with a lot of guys in Dumbarton, the town has a vibrant music scene.

“I always wanted to write about Glasgow. I’ve never really heard one about Glasgow that struck a chord with me, I thought I’d spend a day and see what I could come up with. I wanted to write something for the city, not for my own personal gain. 2014 was such a big year, with the Commonwealth games, and the MTV awards, and almost book ended by the Clutha, and the accident at George Square. I wanted to talk about the friendliness, the willingness to help. I tried to say how I felt, and if people can relate that’s even better. In the face of these tragedies, and the success, the people are the biggest asset to Glasgow, and Scotland.” The single Glasgow can be bought on iTunes and Amazon from Sunday, January 26, and every penny that’s raised goes directly to the Glasgow City Council’s fund for the families.

Scott said: “The song says ‘no man walks alone, we take care of our own’ and I really feel that’s a fitting tribute.” You can check out his music on Scott McWatt Music on Facebook.
