Silverton, Overtoun, Dumbarton East, and Central community councils have agreed to raise funds for a memorial park bench in memory of the late community council secretary. Sheila was a member of Dumbarton East and Central Community Council for several years, and was active in several community campaigns, and planning applications. The local campaigner started the Save Postie’s Park campaign two years ago but died before the campaign was won. Sheila rallied the community together against the proposals to build a school there, and fought to save the area’s green space. Now the councils have decided to honour her memory, and that of her beloved dog Poppy, with a park bench to be situated in one of her favourite dog walking places, at either Posties Park or Levengrove Park. Rose Harvie, friend and fellow campaigner, told the Reporter: “Sheila Urqhuart was a very good friend to many people in Dumbarton. She was fanatical about community matters, especially anything to do with planning. She and I, as two secretaries and planning officers of the community councils, worked together on various planning applications for the community councils, either objecting or supporting. “Shiela had firm views on a wide range of topics, and felt extremely strongly about the threat to Posties Park. We are honouring her memory as a highly valued member of the Dumbarton community. “She was also much loved by the dog-walking community and often took her beloved dog Poppy round Posties Park.” The bench has been ordered from West Dunbartonshire Council’s Greenspace department, at a cost of approximately £700, which includes erection of the bench and maintenance by the council. The community council’s are now appealing for donations to pay for the memorial. There will be contributions from the two community councils, and an appropriately worded plaque will be inscribed on the bench. Independent Councillor George Black added: “The Posties Park campaign was a terrific example of people power and Sheila’s bench will serve as a testament to that power.” Donations should be made, preferably in the form of a cheque made out to Dumbarton East and Central Community Council, and addressed to The Treasurer, DECCC, 127 Glasgow Road, Dumbarton. Donations can be made at meetings of the two community councils, either DECCC at St. Augustine’s Church Hall on the second Tuesday of the month, between 7-8.30pm or SOCC at The Crosslet Centre on the second Thursday of the month between 7.30-9pm.
