Large amounts of waste including slabs, tiles, and mortar have been dumped adjacent to Renton Road and has begun to fall onto the railway track below.

A spokesman for Network Rail said their teams spend time removing tonnes of litter every year.

James Cormack, from Dumbarton East Community Council, said: “Whoever is doing this is clearly trying to avoid paying landfill tax.

“It’s right on the roadside and there’s loads of it. It’s started falling down now close to the railway line, it’s really dangerous.” A local resident, who did not want to be named, said “I saw a lorry drive up there and dump some materials as I was driving by one day. I went back to look and saw how close it was to the railway bridge, and material was falling down near the tracks.

“I don’t know who owned the lorry, or who it is, but what they’re doing is incredibly dangerous. They’ve just dumped it so they can do it cheaply, and avoid paying a landfill, with no consideration for anyone else.

“Slates and tiles and rubble can all roll onto the tracks easily – this is how accidents happen.” The council confirmed the land in question is privately owned. A Network Rail spokesman said: “Our maintenance teams have to spend valuable time removing thousands of tonnes of litter and waste from our infrastructure every year. This is a completely avoidable task which uses up time that could be better spent on duties that could further improve the performance of our network and the service we provide to the travelling public.” Anyone who spots fly-tipping can call 03457 114141.
