Scottish Episcopal Church Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway Gregor Duncan is formally opening the Carbon Sprouts community garden project at St Mungo’s Episcopal Church on July 4.

The scheme, run by the Leamy Foundation, holds workshops on growing food, cooking health meals and reducing food waste.

The official launch day will include displays from other community gardens in the area, a ‘growing tour’ from seed planting to harvesting, food and refreshments. The three-hour event starts at noon.

The garden is currently running food growing workshops and will start cooking skills workshops in August.

Carbon Sprouts project officer, Kevin Mason, said the official opening is aimed at promoting the project and letting people know what it is about.

He said: “It’s a food growing and climate change education project. We run workshops and activities on food growing and healthy cooking skills with an emphasis on healthy meals and a reduction of food waste.” Mr Mason said urged people to get involved and said the official launch day is open to all.

The scheme received a funding boost of £63,649 from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund earlier this year.

The idea for the garden came about after discussion with people using foodbanks who were interested in trying to grow their own food.
