Following the cancellation of Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games on June 6, the organisers are prepared for all weathers – however it is hoped rain won’t dampen the day.

The main entertainment will begin at 10.45am on Saturday, July 4 with the opening ceremony at games field.

Sir Malcolm Colquhoun is the Chieftain for the Gathering, a role he has had since 2008. He will start the day, leading the Clan Colquhoun pipe band from the car park to the pier, proceeding to the games field.

Heavyweights will begin their competition at 11am, with tossing the caber and the hammer throw being among the highlights for the day.

Children’s events will start shortly after, with a hill race, a kilted dash and obstacle races also taking place on the day.

Organisers are encourage people not only to come along, but to also take part, with races for adults and children available – and people can sign up on the day.

Following the cancellation of the Helenburgh and Lomond Highland Games earlier this month, organisers hope the weather holds out to make sure the games are one of the best yet.

One of the organisers said it was ‘possible’ there would be new visitors to their games, hoping to take part in what they missed at the Helensburgh Games.

She told the Reporter: “Everything is organised. It is just the glorious weather we are looking for.

“Our stall conveners have everything in place, we do this well in advance, but there is always something that can crop up.

“We tend to get more tourists at our event, Luss being the touristy village.” She added it was ‘up to the weather’ but they are as prepared as they can be.

First established in 1875, the gathering has taken place annually – except a break for the two world wars.

Last year attendance was at around 3,800, which has broken 4,000 in previous years.

The Gathering is set to be special for Ken and Jean Abson, a couple from Yorkshire, who are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary at the event.

They first visited Luss 50 years ago on their honeymoon, and attended the games by chance, arriving in Luss the evening before. They have celebrated other wedding anniversarys at the event, but this year is set to be special for the couple.

Ms Abson told the Reporter: “We just love it up there, people are so friendly with us. It was really magical, we got married and toured around Scotland.

“We came across and arrived in Luss and it happened to be the night before the Highland Games.

“Everyone was so friendly, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We always contact the secretary if we are going to come to the games, and she has always been very nice. We always feel very much at home.

“We are certainly looking forward to coming back.”
