Workers have been telling of their terror after a massive blaze ripped through Glasgow's Blochairn Fruit Market.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service was alerted to the fire at 3.44am this morning.

More than 45 firefighters in twelve fire engines were sent to the scene, along with an air appliance to tackle the flames.

Glasgow Times:

As emergency services made the area around the Fruit Market safe workers lined the road outside the warehouse watching the smoke billow across the sky.

One worker, who didn't want to be named, said the fire took hold rapidly.

He said: "One minute we were working away quite the thing and then all off a sudden there was this massive blaze that scared the s**t out of us.

"Guys were just shouting fire, fire and we all ran to get away.

"Thankfully nobody was hurt."

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said: "More than 40 fire fighters are tackling a large fire in a two-storey warehouse on Blochairn Road.

Glasgow Times:

"Twelve appliances were mobilised to the scene after the alarm was raised at 3.44am on Thursday.

"SFRS crew are using high powered hoses to tackle and contain the flames."

Speed restrictions are in place on the M8 and Blochairn Road is closed between Royston Road and Siemens Place.
