THREE youngsters from a Vale primary school talked their way to the top prize in an annual competition for West Dunbartonshire pupils.

Abby Millan, Mark Inglis and Natasha Nixon beat off stiff competition from five other primary school teams to win the 2016 Primary School Road Safety Public Speaking Competition.

The P7 pupils from Jamestown Primary saw off teams from St Mary's, Duntocher, Goldenhill, St Patrick’s, Lennox and Knoxland primaries to take top spot.

All of the teams involved demonstrated their public speaking skills in the final at the council's Garshake offices as they spoke on the subject 'Risky Roads or Risky Road Users' .

The trio impressed judges Jill Mulholland, Transport Scotland and Sandy Allan from Rospa Scotland by urging drivers and pedestrians not the be chancers when it comes to road safety.

Councillor Michelle McGinty, Convener of Educational Services, presented the winners with a quaich and every finalist received a certificate and gift voucher.

She said: "Every year the public speaking competition receives a high number of entries from primary schools. It’s fantastic that so many of our young people are so enthusiastic about road safety. Every team should be proud of themselves for reaching the final and I would like to congratulate Jamestown on their winning performance.”
