A GROUP of young hairdressers at Vale of Leven Academy proved they were a cut above when they raised funds for a young boy with severe disabilities.

Students and staff in the Hairdressing academy at the school got together to help raise £1,500 for Kilpatrick School pupil Cameron Curley.

The 16 year-old, from Alexandria, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, a condition which affects muscle control and movement and has a visual impairment.

But, thanks to the efforts of the second and third year pupils, staff- and a helping hand from Salon Services- the money raised from the fund-raiser will go toward buying Cameron hoist so that he can get around his home more easily.

On hand to collect a cheque on Cameron's behalf last Thursday was his delighted Gran Cathy.

Noreen O'Donnell, hairdressing lecturer at Vale of Leven Academy, explained the background to their generous donation.

She said: "Someone we know in the school knows Cameron's family and we thought it would be great to help them.

"So we asked the pupils back around Christmas time if they could bring in a donation and it would then be contributed to a hamper.

"We had around half a dozen hampers, filled with all sorts of bits and pieces and one premium one and we raffled them off to help raise funds at our Christmas concert."

Noreen also received a donation from Salon Services which helped go into one of the hampers too.

She continued: "I also set up a JustGiving page which raised £850 so all in all we've got £1,500 which will go towards buying Cameron a hoist."

Noreen also told how the community donation from her department is the biggest there's ever been from the school.

She said: "It was quite pleasing that we managed to raise the biggest amount within any of the departments in the school.

"It was down to the fact that this money would go towards someone in the community. I think it helped focus the attention and we got a great reaction.

"I think it's important that kids give back to the community and this is one way of doing just that."
