At around 10.15pm in Katherine Place, the 41-year-old was attacked and sustained head and facial injuries.
He later had to be taken to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow for specialist facial treatment.
Cops are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward. Inspector Neil Smith said: “A positive line of enquiry is being progressed by CID officers.
“I would ask anyone with information which may assist the investigation to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
