Ruth Gallacher, 29, currently studies Television at the City of Glasgow College and, along with four of her fellow students, wrote and directed Fist Punch, a sketch show.

The group had been put forward for the New Talent Award at the British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards.

Ruth, who now lives in Glasgow, said: “Our college lecturers put us forward for the award but we never expected to win. To be nominated was such a massive achievement in itself and so winning was quite a shock.

“Our college course has been great as the lecturers are so supportive and encouraging. Without them, we probably wouldn’t have entered the competition. They really want to push you to make sure you do the very best you can.

“We decided we would like to dedicate the award to Connor Meek, a fellow City of Glasgow College student, who sadly lost his fight with cancer in 2012. He was studying the Television course, too, and was determined to do well.”
