A Vale labourer — released early from a jail sentence for assaulting his girlfriend — accused a sheriff of ‘only giving junkies a second chance’ as he was sent back to prison for threatening to wreck his ex’s home.

Daniel Hyslop, of Bonhill, was jailed for two years and three months in January last year for attacking his then girlfriend.

But he was back in the dock at Dumbarton Sheriff Court (pictured) last week after being released early from his sentence and pleaded guilty to sending his ex threatening texts.

And while Sheriff Craig Turnbull and Hyslop’s lawyer Tom Brown were discussing his record, Hyslop launched a tirade at the sheriff – claiming he gave no one else a second chance but ‘junkies’.

He said: “How come you give all the junkies second chances but you don’t give anyone else chances?” Hyslop, 23, who appeared from custody, was cut short and returned to the cells for a short period — but avoided a charge of contempt after apologising to the sheriff.

The court earlier heard that Hyslop had sent his ex-girlfriend threatening messages and texts on Wednesday (March 18) from a house in Renton.

Fiscal depute Kate O’Sullivan said his victim had finished work at around 11pm when she got a call from Hyslop who sounded drunk.

She said he started shouting and swearing at the woman.

Ms O’Sullivan said the woman went home and continued to receive calls and texts which she didn’t answer.

Hyslop then sent her a message saying: ‘I’m getting the jail tonight and wrecking your house’ and she replied saying she was calling the police.

He continued to send her ‘aggressive and abusive’ messages and at one point spoke to the police when they answered her phone, becoming angry when they refused to put her on.

Hyslop, of Ladyton, Bonhill, pleaded guilty to the offence.

His lawyer told the court the victim was refusing Hyslop access to a child.

He said Hyslop had been drinking at the time and had an alcohol problem.

Sheriff Turnbull sent Hyslop back to jail to serve nine months of his previous sentence and added 30 days for his most recent offence.
