In January of this year, the initial development fell through after Tartan Developments Ltd failed to secure a supermarket retailer for for a 35,000sq ft foodstore at the site due to a downturn in the retail sector.

However, in June West Dunbartonshire Council agreed to remarket scaled down development plans which include a smaller food store of up to 17,000sq ft – as well as a number of other shop units.

Residents will have the chance to listen a presentation about the plans before taking part in a question and answer session.

The event starts at 6pm on Wednesday, July 29 at the Community Education Centre on Main Street, Alexandria.

Patrial demolition work on numbers 30-40 Mitchell Way will be undertaken this financial year as part of advance works taking place to improve the appearance of the site and prepare the area for future development.

The local authority have said £100,000 will be spent on demolition works, and the council would anticipate spending a further £50,000 on environmental improvements in the area.

Patrick McGlinchey, convener for Infrastructure and Regeneration, said: “West Dunbartonshire Council remains committed to regenerating Alexandria town centre. The plans for developing the Mitchell Way site are really positive and will help to deliver our aim of encouraging economic growth in the area and increase employment opportunities. Hopefully plenty of businesses and residents will take the chance to come along to this information event and ask any questions they might have.” David McBride, vice-convener for Infrastructure and Regeneration, added: “After the previous plans for Mitchell Way did not result in the development proceeding the recently approved plans for the site will offer more flexibility to the market when coming forward with development proposals. It is crucial that we get the right development at this key site at the heart of Alexandria to support residents and businesses within the area.” However, critics have lamented a ‘missed opportunity’ for the area.

SNP Councillor Gail Robertson said: “I do have concerns that the loss of potential housing and the opportunity to revisit the road layout could be a missed opportunity. And I do think that the concerns of the local residents and traders need to be heard as the redevelopment discussions have gone on for too long and we are no further forwards. Unfortunately we appear to looking at the same option only on a smaller scale.”PLANS for the council’s proposed re-development of Alexandria’s Mitchell Way will be presented to the community.
