A bearded dragon and a Mississippi map turtle are among the 15 exotic pets at an animal rescue centre in Milton which are seeking new homes.

Staff at the Scottish SPCA animal rescue and rehoming centre are currently looking after six snakes, four bearded dragons, three terrapins, and two turtles.

Knowledgeable owners are being encouraged to come forward and offer the pets good homes.

Adam Downs, centre assistant manager, said: “We’re trying to increase awareness of the fact we rehome exotic pets as few people seem to realise this.

“Lots of people know we rescue and rehome cats, dogs and other more traditional pets but many might be surprised to learn we also care for reptiles.

“The most common type of snake we rescue is the corn snake, although we also have a king snake in our care at the moment.

“Corn snakes can make great pets and can even be suited to first-time snake owners as they are generally quite docile and good to handle.

“Our king snake, Demi, is looking for a more experienced owner as she is a timid soul.

“Bearded dragons are fantastic creatures who can make brilliant pets. We are appealing to people who have previously owned beardies to get in touch and offer these wee fellas good homes.

“Our turtles and terrapins are amongst the most challenging creatures to find homes for and some can remain in our care for a year or more.

“We’d be pleased to hear from anyone who is sure they have the time, knowledge and resources to offer one of our exotics a fresh start.” Anyone interested in offering an exotic pet a new home can call the centre on 03000 999 999.
