YOU cannot fault John McFall MP for his brass neck (McFall's Mandate 27/01/10).
Firstly, the Which? Consumers Champion Award is just part and parcel of an awards industry that has boomed because it provides publicity for charitable organisations.
Being associated with a VIP makes good business sense for Which?
However, there are charities and then there are charities.
Many charities only operate in the interest of their own members, who may have close links with the private, profit-taking sector.
The public benefit may be minimal.
These days the definition of a charity is that it is not a party political organisation.
But banks and financial services are not charities.
They were never set up to "serve the wider interests of society" as Mr McFall suggests.
Their management and shareholders come first.
Indeed, it was Mr McFall and New Labour who robbed the public purse to support the banks and their shareholders, no questions asked.
No voice for or consultation with the ordinary person, wider society, the public or the consumer in that event.
For years Mr McFall MBA (Masters in Business Administration) backed the whole masquerade of "bankers know best" and Brown's "end to boom and bust" because it suited New Labour's own economic interests and vanity.
They all became multi-millionaires.
Look at Blair, he is raking it in from JP Morgan now.
They even knighted Sir Fred the Shred of RBS, the worst banker in history. That is how close New Labour was to the funny money men.
In "serving the wider interests of society" Mr McFall voted for the invasion of Iraq.
As cancer and birth defect rates soar, due to the radioactive dioxin and oil pollution the invasion produced, the place is an environmental disaster zone.
Mr McFall excels in playing innocent and in advertising sales and promotions for New Labour.
