The Glasgow and District Indoor Bowling Association held their Finals Day at West of Scotland IBC on Saturday. Dumbarton were represented in the under-16 singles by Kieran Ward, Ladies Singles by Jacqui Waltham and the Senior Fours by Jim Aitken, Bobby Carmouche, George Lunan and Charlie Cassidy. Kieran cruised to the final with two comfortable wins, and it looked like he was suffering from some nerves in the final as he started with a very loose first end and lost three shots, but proved at the next end that he has nerves of steel and ability in abundance as he scored a maximum count of four. It was full steam ahead from this point on as he raced to a 21-6 victory to lift the trophy in his final year in the age group. Former Ladies Singles winner Sheila Wilson of Cumbernauld IBC was looking to regain the title, and in a fantastic game against Dumbarton's Jacqui Waltham she put up a great fight. After Sheila had led for most of the early part of the game, Jacqui started to get the better of her opponent and took the lead at 19-18. With Sheila lying two shots, and Jacqui needing two shots, spectators looked on in awe as Jacqui removed Sheila's two closest bowls with the last bowl of the match to claim victory. Dumbarton's only other representatives, the Senior Rink skipped by Charlie Cassidy struggled to find their feet and never really made much of an impact in their game against Coatbridge, as they lost out 16-7. Kieran Ward and Christopher Mair travelled to Midlothian on Sunday to represent Dumbarton in the SIBA Greengauge Junior Challenge. They joined six other qualifiers from around the country to form two sections of four players, with each player playing three round robin games, and section winners qualifying for the final. Christopher struggled to get to grips with the carpet in his opening game and lost 15-5 to Craig Darling of East Lothian, while Kieran found his feet early on and defeated his Cowal opponent 15-6. Kieran matched this scoreline in his second game with a victory over Lee McCormack from Stirling. Chris found some form late on and edged out a 15-13 win over Ross Meikle of Blantyre MWIBC. In the final section game Kieran faced Kyle Murray (Aberdeen) who had also won his two games, meaning the winner of this game would qualify for the final. Kyle produced some excellent bowling in the opening ends to take the early lead and continued to dominate until the score reached 13-8 in his favour. Kieran, however, was not going down without a fight and clawed back shot after shot and eventually won the game 15-13. Christopher put in his best performance of the day in his last game and was lying the match on more than one occasion before Darren Weir (Prestwick) saved the game, and then won the game. This was Darren's third win of the day, and he therefore booked himself a place in the final against Kieran Ward. Kieran put in another impressive performance and deservedly won the match 15-2, claiming his second trophy of the weekend.
