DUMBARTON striker Garry Fleming insists the only way is up as Sons head into the second quarter of the season.

Sitting comfortably in seventh, Dumbarton have bagged three wins so far this season, including the scalps of big guns Hibernian and St Mirren on the opening two weekends of the season. Fleming admits Sons early form had raised expectations and he expects his side to push on further up the table.

Fleming said: “The season has been good so far, it’s a new team and I would say we are still getting to know each other.

“We are happy with the 10 points but I think we want to be pushing further up the table towards the play-offs.

“With the squad we have I don’t see any reason why we cannot make a push. We have a big group with lots of experience, but you have to remember the younger guys too. Donald McCallum and Mikey Hopkins have made the step up from the youth squad this year and they have fitted in brilliantly and supplied that spark coming off the bench.” Fleming is quick to remind fans how competitive the league is, and admits the club should be pushing towards the top spots.

He continued: “You look at the likes of Raith Rovers, who were a mid-table side last year, sitting in second, and I think it shows you just how competitive this league can be.

“No one would have expected St Mirren to be where we are at this stage, but anybody is capable of beating anyone in this division and we want to press on.” Following a free weekend due to the international break, Sons’ action resumes this Saturday with a trip to the capital.

Alan Stubbs’ Hibs will provide the opposition at Easter Road — a ground Fleming revealed he relishes playing at.

He added: “The likes of Easter Road are the places you want to play football.

“With Rangers and St Mirren also in the league it is a great place to play. These are the grounds you want to show your talent, places that you aim to play at.

“Hopefully we can go to Easter Road and take something.

“We have been struggling a bit on the goal front but it would be great to get a goal there and get back to some form.”
