DUMBARTON forward Kevin Cawley is convinced Sons can get back on track with victory over Morton on Saturday.

Sons fell to 5-0 defeat to Falkirk at the weekend. However with memories still fresh of their last clash with a team in the bottom half of the table — a 2-1 win over Livingston at the Rock in which Cawley scored — the former Alloa man is confident of a win to put some more distance between Sons and the league’s bottom sides Livingston and Alloa.

He said: “The game against Livingston, I think we had to win that game because it was going into the international break and we had been on a bad run, it was good to put a bit of distance between us and Livi.

“We have already beat Morton in the cup, we were unfortunate not to beat them in the league down at Cappielow, it will be a tough game but one we are looking to win.” The Livingston tie concluded Dumbarton’s first quarter of the season with Sons sitting comfortably in mid-table. After some ups and downs in those opening games, Cawley is confident the team are better placed to improve on their league position in the second quarter.

He explained: “I thought we had a decent enough start, obviously beating Hibs and St Mirren in the first two games was great. We had a bit of a dip after that but the Livi win was crucial after that.

“We’ve definitely come on as a team from the start of the season. You need time to gel and I think everyone knows each other’s strengths and weaknesses now, hopefully we can kick on in the second quarter of the season.

Cawley has been struggling with injury since that win over Livi, he rolled his ankle and played on just long enough to head the opening goal, but in jumping to head home Willie Gibson’s cross he knew he would have to come off. He hasn’t featuered since but hopes to be back for the Morton tie.
