As DUMBARTON wait to learn their Scottish cup fate, Grant Gallagher is in no doubt as to who he would rather face in the fifth round tie – he wants a crack at the top tier Dundee and an historic cup upset.

Sons landed another home draw in the last 16 tie, after wins over Alloa and Queen of the South in previous rounds, but will have to wait until January 26 for the twice-postponed Dundee v Falkirk tie to go ahead.

After facing two opponents from the same division, welcoming Paul Hartley’s Premiership side is a mouthwatering prospect for Sons fans; however Falkirk may perhaps offer a slightly improved chance of progress.

Gallagher is clear n’t in two minds about which he would prefer: he is desperate for Sons to have the chance to test themselves against a top-flight team.

He said: “I think we would rather play Dundee. It’s a team we know less about because we don’t face them regularly, they’re in the top league so it is a good opportunity to show people that we are not just a team in the Championship there to make up the numbers.

“Being a part-time team, some people assume that at times. I think the boys would probably prefer Dundee to show how good a team we are.”

The tie will take place on the weekend of February 6, and despite admitting to favouring a clash with Dundee, Gallagher is confident Sons can improve on their recent results against Falkirk should the Bairns win through.

Peter Houston's side have a good recent record in the competition having reached last season's final, only to be pipped by Inverness. Falkirk have a 100 per cent record from their three matches with Sons this season, however Gallagher thinks Dumbarton showed enough in two narrow away defeats that they are capable of turning them over and reaching the last eight.

He said: "In the first game away to Falkirk (a 2-1 Falkirk win) I thought we were unlucky, we conceded two goals early on but got right back into the game."

Dumbarton boss Stevie Aitken was delighted to land another home draw and insisted his side will be up for the challenge of either opponent. However after Falkirk's last visit to the Rock ended in 5-0 hammering for Sons, Aitken would welcome the chance to put that result right.

He said: "First of all we are delighted to be in this round of the Scottish Cup. We have come through two tricky ties to get there, and came through them really well.

"When there's a chance of getting a team from the top league at home, there is always a bit of extra spice to the match and it'll be a good crowd and a day to look forward to.

"If it is Falkirk we know all about them and know we will be facing a really good side who are going well.

"The home game against Falkirk we let ourselves down that day, but we've put that behind us with some good results and performances since then.

"We competed really well in the other games against Falkirk and on another day might have got something from both games. Falkirk are up challenging in our league and it's no surprise with the players they have."
