The Scottish Cup is a competition that has been good to Darren Barr, and after extending his stay at Dumbarton, the Sons skipper is determined to add to his list of cup heroics and lead Sons to an historic upset over Dundee on Saturday.

The 30-year-old recently agreed a contract to keep him at Sons until the end of the season and is free from injury and suspension in time for the visit of the Dens Park side in the last 16 tie.

Barr skippered Falkirk to the final in 2009, only for the Bairns to lose out to a Nacho Novo strike which gave Rangers the trophy. But he wouldn’t have to wait long to exercise any demons from that day.

Barr scored the opener in Hearts’ famous 5-1 win in the 2012 final over Edinburgh rivals Hibs.

Now he insists welcoming Paul Hartley’s Premiership side to the Rock is a prospect the Sons squad are relishing and he believes they have enough quality to cause an upset and continue their dream run.

He said: “It’s a massive incentive to be playing one of the top sides in the Premiership. It’s at home so hopefully we can do ourselves justice. and I think we can because the boys have been playing really well recently.

“I’ve got some great memories in the Scottish Cup, even the ones I thought would be bad at the time have really helped me along the way.

“A cup run can be massive for the club and the whole community, I’ve seen it happen. That’s what we’re trying to do.

“We have a lot of boys who will be desperate to prove themselves in such a big game.”

Barr joined up at Sons last in the summer on a deal until mid-January. Despite interest from other clubs he agreed to stay at Sons until thise summer.

Part of the reason was the faith manager Stevie Aitken showed by offering him a chance in the summer when many clubs were likely put off by Barr’s injury history.

He said: “I was glad to get everything sorted. The gaffer was keen to keep me and I’ve been happy, I’ve been playing regularly and I want to continue to help the club and the team in any way I can. The manager took a chance on me in the summer which I was really grateful for and hopefully I can repay him on the park.”
