Aitkenbar and St Peter's Primary School pupils have been honing their netball skills in a recent weeks and both sets of pupils look set to take the netball festival at the Meadow Centre by storm this month

Staff from both schools have been working hard since August to develop the sport of netball and get more pupils involved in this activity.

Kirstie Campbell and Sarah Young, class teachers from Aitkenbar and Margaret Brown, class teacher from St. Peter’s have launched a joint After-School Netball Club open to all Primary 5-7 pupils in the schools.

This has been a success around 25 children attending each week.

Although run as a joint after-school club, each school still has its own team and attend the termly Primary Netball Festivals organised by Active Schools.

The next of these festivals takes place in February, where they will compete against other primary schools in the Dumbarton/Vale of Leven area at the Meadow Centre.

Yvonne Macdonald, Active Schools Coordinator for St. Peter’s PS said: “The Aitkenbar/St. Peter’s Netball Club is a fantastic example of schools working in partnership to provide more opportunities for their pupils to get more active, more often out with the school day.

"It is brilliant that the class teachers are willing to give up their own time to run these sessions and our Active Schools Netball Festivals then give the children the chance to put their skills into practice and compete against other schools in the local area. The sport of Netball continues to grow in the Dumbarton/Vale area with the majority of primary schools now running lunchtime or after-school clubs.”
