DUMBARTON manager Stevie Aitken has revealed there will be no Sons return for Scott Agnew after the midfielder agreed terms with Stranraer.

Agnew was released by St Mirren last week sparking rumours of a return to Dumbarton, where he spent four seasons before Ian Murray made the 28-year-old one of his first signings at the Buddies last summer.

However, Aitken revealed any hopes of Agnew coming back have been dashed as the boss has been told he has agreed terms at Stair Park.

Aitken also revealed that previous signing target Sebastian Osei-Obengo is an option he may revisit.

Dumbarton announced the signing of the Ghanian striker in March but were scuppered by red tape when they couldn’t gain registration for the front man because he spent the previous season playing amateur football in Gibraltar.

The Sons boss admits he is open to the prospect of making a summer move for him as he looks to offer trials during pre-season.

He said: “We’ll get five or six in for pre-season. Sebastian might be one we revisit if we can get through the red tape we had last time. Scott Agnew has agreed to go to Stranraer.

“We’ve offered terms to players at other clubs so we’ll see how they work out, but it is early days.”

Scott Taggart, Kevin Cawley, Mikey Hopkins, Jordan Kirkpatrick and Paul Heffernan have already been released by Sons, while loan players Calum Waters, Jamie Lindsay, Tom Walsh and Kler Heh have returned to their parent clubs and Jon Routledge has moved on.

Aitken conceded there were some tough decisions to make and he thought long and hard about wielding the axe, particularly in the case of Cawley.

He said: “There were some tough decisions to make but it is our job to make sure we improve on last year. That means some players have to make way. Some decisions are football-based and some are purely financial.

“Scott Taggart wanted to play regular football. He was unlucky to get injured when he was in the team last year and we thought it was the right time for him to move on.

“Kevin Cawley was probably the hardest decision, his attitude has been first class all season and scored some great goals for us.”
