DUMBARTON Academy secured a good three points following a fine Andrew MacDonald winner scored early in the second half against Cumbernauld Colts to win 2-1 at Broadwood Stadium on Saturday.

With Accies captain Jack Buchanan missing following the birth of his daughter and Craig Cavana unavailable, Marcus Dooley took the armband and Alan Filshie and Alan Sweeney returned.

On 15 minutes, Callum Shipcott saw a shot blocked by Richard McKenzie for a corner.

Andrew MacDonald took the corner, with an excellent cross reaching Marcus Dooley – whose powerful header found the net.

On the half hour Accies conceded a needless penalty.

A cross into Accies box saw a trip off the ball. Daniel McKay’s finish was very good.

Despite the setback, Accies continued to press forward – defender Ian Davie’s left foot volley from fully 35 yards caught the eye – with Cumbernauld goalkeeper Cairan Brady preventing the goal.

Colin MacPhee then saw a shot from 18 yards go over the bar.

Accies continued to press forward and their efforts were rewarded when Alan Nicholson produced an excellent pass to release Andrew MacDonald – the forward finishing well by lobbing the ball over the advancing Cumbernauld keeper Brady.

On the whole Accies were defending well as a unit – limiting Cumbernauld to opportunities from afar, however Daniel McKay had an opportunity which keeper McGillivray did well to save.

Substitute Tom McHard entered the fray, which triggered an Accies formation reshuffle. This saw Accies take control of the game again.

A late goal conceded in the previous league match against Strathclyde University was clearly still in Accies mind with the team doing well as a unit to see the match through.

Accies next face Duntocher Hibs in the cup on Saturday.

All at Accies would like to pass their best wishes to captain Jack Buchanan and his wife Laura on the birth of their daughter Bethany.
