Helensburgh Tennis Club hosted the 2018 District Vets tournament at the weekend and it attracted players from all four local clubs.
The round robin event produced two group winners who went on to play each other in a final.
In the men’s event Kirktonhill’s Alan Barbour and Andy Bone were clear winners as was Helensburgh’s Phil Hamilton and Bobby Kerr. In the final Alan and Andy got off to a great start breaking Bobby’s serve in the opening game.
They went on the lead 3 – 1 before Phil and Bobby broke back to level the score at 3 – 3. With Phil serving, the 7th game went to 10 deuces as Andy saved game point 7 times but eventually Bobby and Phil got the winning point to claim the game.
With Phil and Bobby now in the driving seat they went on the break Alan’s serve and go to take the match.
In the ladies event Craighelen’s Sue Black and Susan Bell comfortably won their group as did Alison Fotheringham and Judith Reilly.
The Craighelen ladies used all their experience to dominate the game from the start and despite Alison and Judith putting up a brave fight it was Sue and Susan who came away winners.
The entry fees gathered will be split into four and donated to a charity of each of the winner’s choice
