Dumbarton Academy FP started their defence of the William Turner Challenge Cup with a 4-1 away win on Saturday against a Kilsyth team who are challenging for promotion into the Premier League.

Just as Kilsyth seemed to be gaining a foothold they went behind on 20 minutes. There seemed little danger when Peter Griffen passed the ball back to keeper Gordon Murray, but rather than clearing upfield, he tried to take the ball around Accies forward Scott Cowan. Cowan nicked the ball off him then rolled into the net.

The second half was largely dictated by Accies forward play. Scott Cowan saw a volley saved by Murray and Alan Nicholson’s quick thinking saw him flock the ball over his head and into the net for a nice finish.
Accies went three up on the hour as Shipcott placed his pass perfectly towards Colin MacPhee - who shot home.

To their credit, Kilsyth kept pushing and were rewarded on 65 minutes as Accies conceded a needless free-kick which Scott Crawford struck well - the pace of the ball beating Porter.

The scoring finished with five minutes to go when Alan Nicholson scored his second.

Accies’ next match is against Bannockburn away in the quarter-finals of the Alona West of Scotland Cup this Saturday. A team/supporters bus will be running. Anyone interested should contact David Muir on 07528 162168 for details.

Accies were also delighted to announce that former player Paul McGlinchey has signed again for the club for the remainder of this season.
