Before last weekend’s 1-0 win over Alloa, Sons had gone eight games without a victory, a sequence that stretched back to the 3-1 win away at Cowdenbeath on December 27.

That poor run included home defeats to bottom half rivals Cowden and Livingston, however Murray insists he was never worried that Sons would continue their spell without notching three points.

He told SportScene: “The result was first and foremost against Alloa, we had found that to our detriment in the last few weeks. In my opinion I thought we played quite well in those games, apart from at Easter Road.

“Against Livingston, Cowden and Queens I thought we played well at times. We pick up one point out of nine in those games and we don’t play great against Alloa and pick up all three.

“I was never too concerned with the way things were going because I did feel performances were good.” Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle will not have come as a surprise to the Sons’ faithful, with the league leaders in imperious form and destined for a return to the Premiership. However tonight’s (Tuesday) Stirlingshire Cup tie at home to Falkirk may provide some light relief to the long slog of the Championship campaign.

Murray is looking forward to the tie as he gets set to give some of the club’s younger players a chance in the first team.

He said: “It has worked out well for us with the injuries we’ve had. We have a few back in training and they need a game so we will look to get them involved. It will allow us to get a look at some of the under-20s as well, they play on Sunday and some will be involved against Falkirk.

“It’s a great chance them to stake a claim for the first team.”
