DUMBARTON boss Jim Chapman has set his attention on improving the Sons striking department in the January transfer window.

Chapman's side have improved greatly with the team in impressive form before both festive fixtures against Clyde on Boxing Day

and Stenhousemuir on Saturday were postponed.

Chapman acknowledged a front line made up of Chris Craig, Roddy Hunter, Denis McLaughlin and Derek Caracy have helped boost Dumbarton's position in the league.

But he also insists it is vital for the Sons to have more fire power in the final third and for the team to become ruthless in front of goal in the league.

He said: "I have made it clear that we want to strengthen our attack.

"We have plenty of ability in that area and we do have good strikers. Roddy Hunter, Denis McLaughlin, Chris Craig and Derek Carcary have been performing well but we need to take our chances in Division

Two.

"At the start of the season we were not taking chances and giving away sloppy goals.

"We have good players who can create chances, but we just need to create more chances in games and take them more often.

"We have signing targets and we have made enquiries about them to different clubs.

"A lot of them are still attached to a club, but we will move on and keep on searching for new players."

The Dumbarton squad received an early Christmas present when keeper Jan Vojacek extended his contract until the end of the season last month.

Chapman was delighted they will keep hold of the Czech and said: "Jan has been on great form since he joined the squad.

"It is a huge boost for the club and shows how progressive Dumbarton are to keep hold of players of that calibre.

"He was only staying until the end of the year but David McEwan was injured so it is fantastic he is staying until the end of the season."

Dumbarton, along with all SFL clubs this winter, have suffered from the cold snap which has hit Scotland.

But despite having two games in a row called off over the Christmas period, Chapman is satisfied with his players' fitness levels.

He added: "Unfortunately there have been no games for us recently.

"But the players have been kept active with training and we had a friendly on Sunday night against Arthurlie juniors which went well."

Dumbarton's next fixture is against Brechin City at Glebe Park on Saturday January 16.
