AXED Sons captain Mick Dunlop has this week admitted that it was a hammer blow when he was shown the door by the club.
But after being released by boss Jim Chapman at the start of this month, along with nine other first team players, the 27-year-old has already been snapped up by Second Division rivals Alloa Athletic.
And now the big defender is dreading his return to Strathclyde Homes Stadium next season to take on his old team mates.
Dunlop, who has also played for Kilmarnock, Ayr and Queen's Park, told Sport Scene: "I didn't want to leave Dumbarton in the first place, but there was nothing I could do about it as it was out of my control.
"Dumbarton are a good club and I had quite a successful time there.
"I also made a lot of friends and the fans were always good to me so I would like to thank them for their support.
"I had a few injury problems when I first came to the club but they were patient with me and I appreciate that.
"As I said, leaving the club was out of my control, but I'm delighted to sign for Alloa."
And although there was no doubt in Dunlop's mind about joining his new side when Wasps manager Allan Maitland contacted him, he knows there could be a hot reception at the Rock next year.
He added: "The Alloa manager phoned me and said he was interested in signing me.
"I met him, was impressed by what he had to say and I think it is a good move for me.
"It will be a bit strange to go back to Dumbarton but I hope the fans don't give me too much stick.
"Playing against Dumbarton isn't something I'm looking forward to, especially having many friends from the club."
