JIM Chapman believes his players have passed their pre-season fitness test with flying colours as their preparations for the new campaign hots up.

The Dumbarton manager has watched his players being put through their paces in training and in their 0-0 draw against Annan Athletic on Saturday.

And the Sons boss reckons they are in great shape going into their second friendly match against Partick Thistle tonight (Tuesday).

Chapman said: "The physical side of things have been pleasing and I have been pleased with the players' work ethic.

"The tests have been excellent but we know that the real test comes once the games start. We are looking forward to playing good games against good opposition.

"It's not about progress on the pitch because I know what the players are capable of.

"The friendlies are about finding out our strengthens and also identifying things that we will need to work on developing. There is still a lot of work to be done."

Chapman was adamant his full attention will be on how his own players shape up rather than their opponents in the up-and-coming friendly games.

He added: "I don't expect anything from the opposition. I don't think I can do anything about them. It's all about our work ethic on the pitch that concerns me."

Paul Maxwell, Stephen Grindlay, Allan McManus and Ross Campbell were given their debuts and all produced solid performances.

Iain Chisholm had the best chance of the game when he rattled a blistering shot off the bar in the first half. Chances were few and far between in a low-key second half

Even though they couldn't break down the Galabank defence on Saturday, Chapman was pleased with his side's first friendly.

He said: "The first game is never easy and it's a chance to blow away the cobwebs. The boys did well, and we created a few chances to win the game."
