LITHGOW EYES PLAY-OFF SPOT
NEW Sons signing Alan Lithgow sees no reason why Dumbarton can't secure promotion glory this season.
The powerful defender was unveiled as Alan Adamson's latest recruit at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium last week.
Former Hearts stopper Lithgow revealed one of the main attractions in moving to Dumbarton from Clyde was the quality of the squad.
And he believes they have what it takes to reach the play-offs this season.
He said: "With the squad we have, I think we will be up there competing for a play-off spot. It's a tough league but with the quality in the team I think we will be up there.
"I spoke to Alan and when he mentioned some of the players he's brought in I knew they had a good team.
"It is a good move for me. My agent contacted Alan Adamson and my name was mentioned. Alan was quite keen to bring me to the club.
"They came up with a deal and I was quite happy to sign. I was hoping to get full-time football this season but things are terrible at the moment in football.
"I'm not using Dumbarton but it is a good opportunity for me to get there again."
Lithgow represented Scotland at under-19 level on three occasions. However, he believes the most valuable experience has been battling in the Third Division.
He added: "I think the most experience that will help me will be from playing in the Third Division.
"It's the hardest league I've played in because it's 100 miles an hour and very little football is played.
"The Second Division has a much higher standard and better football but playing in the Third will be useful."
Adamson was delighted to sing the big defender who he reckons will strengthen his backline.
He said: "He is a top class defender. He is a strong ball-winning centre-half and he will be a rock at the back for us.
"That is really what we have needed. With all due respects to the players last season, we did give away too many goals.
"Hopefully Alan will be able to address that. I have seen him a lot and he has been looking for a full-time club but realised there's not that many opportunities about.
"He will use us as a stepping stone to get that. He's only 23 and he has played Hearts and was an under-19 international so he's a good player."
