DUMBARTON youngster Martin McNiff will be side-lined for five weeks following his pre-season training injury that left him with a broken metatarsal.

The midfielder was running with the ball in a five a side match at Levengrove Park when his foot was caught in a hole in the pitch, and despite getting back up and carrying on, the pain was too much for the 19-year-old.

And on Friday it was revealed that he will be out of action for at least five weeks, but McNiff is staying positive and is aiming to return for the team's match against Clydebank.

He told Sport Scene: "The injury was really bad news for me, no-one thought it was this bad when it happened, we thought it was just a little bit of tissue damage.

"When I was told it was a broken metatarsal, it was devastating for me.

"However, I am not letting it keep me down, I am going to try and get back as soon as possible and be amongst the squad as much as I can.

"I am going to attend the pre-season friendlies and mix with the team and learn about the new players.

"I am doing all I can right now to make sure I am out for as little time as possible and hopefully I will be on that pitch soon.

"The only thing I can do is stay positive.

"I suppose it is better this happened now where I miss no league games, where as if it happened during the season it could have seen me miss a whole host of them.

"I want to be back for the Clydebank game and that is what I will work for."

Manager Alan Adamson admitted the news of McNiff's injury came as a real blow to his plans.

But he believes he will be back fighting fit sooner rather than later due to his great work ethic.

He added: "Losing Martin is a blow, but from what I have learned from him, he won't let it keep him down.

"He will be back as soon as he can and he will still be in my plans for next season."

• DUMBARTON kicked off their pre-season friendly action with a 1-1 draw with Stranraer at closed-door game at Glasgow Green.

Pat Walker opened the scoring before the Blues equalised from the penalty spot.
