Dundee edged the game 1-0 and reflecting on the penalty after the match, Murray said: “It is these little moments in league campaigns that can sometimes define where you finish.

“Any penalty is a great chance but to get one so early after going behind was perfect for us.

“You would fancy Prunts all day but that is two penalties in a row we have now missed from two different players.

“People will ask why did Bryan take it but it is easy to look back and point fingers.” However, even before the penalty was awarded Murray believed his team deserved to be ahead, he continued: “Our performance was excellent and I thought the result was very harsh.

“I felt we were the better side throughout the game.

“In the first half in particular I felt we dominated from the first minute to the 45th minute —the second half was more level but I thought we still shaded it.” As well as missing the penalty deep into the second half, Dumbarton also had a goal disallowed during the first period when Chris Turner thought he had given the Sons the lead before Brian Colvin chopped it off.

Murray was upset with the decision but was pleased with how his players reacted to it: “Obviously we don’t agree with the ref’s decision to chop the goal off in the first half — I don’t think many teams would.

“But after the decision I thought we responded really well.

“We get on with the game and we went again and tried to get goals and win the game rather than getting caught up in too much in the decision.” And while the Sons were unfortunate at one end of the park, they didn’t fare much better at the other end where a defensive mix up saw Stephen Grindlay’s clearance only reach Dundee striker Peter McDonald who took full advantage to score and give Paul Hartley’s men all three points.

Murray added: “We were disappointed with the goal but it has happened too many times so we need to tighten up.

“The goalie has got to clear the ball — it is as simple as that, the defence can’t do anymore.

“It is one of those things that as a goalkeeper you have to take responsibility.” For a full match report turn to pages 70 and 71.
