Campbell was on the books at Rangers until he turned 20. Since then, largely as a result of Rangers’ financial woes, he has seen a number of his former youth team team mates make the step up to the first team but he is looking to get the better of them this weekend.

Speaking after Saturday’s loss against Queen of the South, Campbell said: “The boys are feeling a bit down just now but give it a couple of days and heads will start to pick back up and it is a big occasion — some of the boys have never played at Ibrox so it will be massive and they will want to go there and give a good account of ourselves.

“It is going to be a hard ask but we have got to start picking up points somewhere and who is to say it can’t be next week.

“I was at Rangers until I was 20, it was a good place and I’m looking forward to going back as a Dumbarton player and hopefully as a Dumbarton player to pick up some points.

“With administration and things, a lot of the boys I used to okay with got the chance to play and a couple of them are still there now and doing really well but hopefully after Saturday they won’t be doing too well.” Reflecting on Saturday’s defeat, Campbell said: “Obviously we are disappointed with the result but to be fair to Queen of the South they came here and bossed the game which obviously isn’t what we want — teams shouldn’t be coming here and dictating to us, we should be coming out the traps better.

“The boys are frustrated because we know we are a good team and we’ve got good players but we’ve not really shown our true potential in the past couple of weeks.” Campbell started Saturday’s match up front with Colin Nish before being moved out to the left wing in the second half and he confirmed that he is hoping to get an extended run up front in Ian Murray’s team.

He added: “I like to play up front and I will do a job out wide if the gaffer wants me to play out wide but I know my ability and I know if I get chances I will score goals — its the type of player I am — I have done it all my career.

But I just need to hope the chances start coming sooner rather than later and I start scoring.”
