The Sons went in 1-0 down at the break thanks to a Derek Lyle capitalising on a poor back-pass from Scott Linton and things went from bad to worse in the second half with the South netting three more times.

Despite the Sons’ poor form towards the end of last season, losing seven of the last 12 games since the turn of March, the Bet Butler Stadium still gave the feel of something of a fortress. The Sons were a daunting prospect for visiting teams, with the scalps of Hamilton and Falkirk amongst others last term and winning two of their last three games of the season on home soil 4-1.

BetVictor made Alloa and Cowdenbeath the favourites 7/4 joint-favourites to win the wooden spoon at the start of the season with the former losing 13 of their last 20 games of last term, and lacklustre efforts thus far. Dumbarton have been clipped into 3/1 (from 4s) to finish bottom of the pile however it would be something of a surprise if either of the pre-season favourites didn’t finish last, with Cowdenbeath appearing the value at 11/4.

Championship to Finish Bottom prices from BetVictor: Alloa 7/4, Cowdenbeath 11/4, Dumbarton 3/1, Livingston 4/1 and 20/1 bar.

Both Cowdenbeath and Alloa have started the season poorly, with Jimmy Nicholls’ side lucky to draw 2-2 with Falkirk on the opening weekend, two of the home side’s three shots on targets finding the back of the net.

They followed that with a 2-1 defeat at Livingston at the weekend and it’s fair to say the Blue Brazil’s defence looks vulnerable to say the least.

The pressure is on Barry Smith’s side to perform ahead of the Wasps’ must-win game with Cowdenbeath at Central Park. As mentioned, the Blue Brazil have been very fortunate in their opening two games of the campaign and can be opposed at the even money mark; Alloa excellent value at 9/4, the draw 2/1.

Rangers, Hibs and Hearts have set a pace thus far 4/7, 2/1 and 4/1 at the head of the market for the title and 25/1 bar and whilst the ‘big three’ may take some catching at the top, fourth place undoubtedly remains up for grabs.

Dumbarton remain 16/1 outsiders to nick fourth and whilst that may be a touch optimistic there are much worse 16s shots about; Falkirk the 4/5 favourites to nick fourth with BetVictor.

The 16s should go however, should the Sons cause something of an upset when travelling to Ibrox on Saturday. Rangers remain odds-on for the title but were eased after last week’s shock defeat at home to Hearts, can lightning strike twice?

BetVictor make the Gers 2/13 favourites, Dumbarton 10/1 and the draw 5/1 but do the home side look a bit skinny at the prices?

Whilst the Sons can’t match Rangers in terms of finance and squad depth, the pressure on Ally McCoist’s side remains ferocious and the Sons could take a share of the spoils, sparking their season into life thereafter.
