HEROIC defending was the order of the day at The Rock on Saturday and centre back Scott Taggart was delighted as Sons took the first points off of Hearts this season.

Robbie Neilson’s side had managed five wins on the bounce heading into the league showdown but last gasp defending and the width of the crossbar saw Sons frustrate the large Hearts contingent in the crowd.

Taggart and defensive partner Andy Graham were the stand outs in a fantastic all-round display and Taggart insisted the point was no less than his side deserved.

He told SportScene: “It was a great result for us, I thought we deserved it to be honest, we limited them to only a few chances and at the end we probably had one of the best opportunities of the game to win it, but overall I am happy with the point.

“You need a few last gasp tackles and myself and big Andy Graham had to make a few.

“But, you need that against teams such as Hearts because they do create quite a lot and sometimes you just have to get yourself in the road and fair enough me and Andy done that today.

“I thought to be fair it was a good performance from the whole team and that is two clean sheets in a row so we must be doing something right.” The former Morton man has started the last two games in the centre back berth following an injury to Lee Mair despite previously starring for the Cappielow side as an attacking full back.

However, the 22-year-old appears to be building a formidable partnership with Graham at the back with two clean sheets in as many games and he admitted he has no qualms about continuing in the more unusual role, he continued: “I’ve played in a number of positions throughout my career so it is not as if the centre back role is new to me.

“I’ve played there before if needed and it is just the way it has worked out here that I’ve needed to play centre back and I have seemed to be ok so I’ve just got to keep it going and hopefully I can build upon today.” October sees Sons face Rangers, Hearts and Hibs in as many weeks but following the confidence boosting draw with the Edinburgh side, Taggart stressed that Ian Murray’s men should be looking forward to the opportunity to test themselves against supposed superior opposition.

He added: “You look at the league and you see how many good teams there are in it now and every day you are looking at the calendar to see when you are playing them and that gives a bit of excitement when you come down on a Saturday.

“What is better than facing the likes of Rangers, Hearts and Hibs? I know we are part time but it is fantastic, in three weeks we will be facing those three in a row, who would have thought it.

“It is too big to miss out on.”
