DUMBARTON boss Ian Murray reserved special praise for Sons hitman Archie Campbell after the summer signing got himself off the mark for the club in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Alloa.

Campbell picked up the opener for his new side following his arrival from Greenock Morton in the close season and Murray proclaimed the starting jersey is now his as long as he continues his prolificacy in front of goal.

He said: “It is excellent for Archie.

“He has had to wait patiently since the Ibrox game and the only reason he hasn’t been playing is just because we had to change something after Ibrox and try and get the results from somewhere.

“The guys that played against Hibs done really well and then Chris Kane has come in and scored on his second debut, before going on to score again last week — but he is out injured and Archie has come in and scored.

“So he is the man that is in possession of the jersey now and as long as he continues that level of performance and work rate then it will be his.” With games against Rangers, Hibs and Hearts all looming on the horizon for Sons, picking up points against the part time sides has become crucial, starting this week with the win over Alloa.

Jimmy Nicholl’s Cowdenbeath are next on the fixture list for Murray’s men and he admitted they are looking to pick up as many points as they possibly can.

He added: “I think it was important that we didn’t lose.

“I think heading into these games if we took four points then that would have been fine, we have now got a bit of a scope for error — not that we are thinking that way — but we are now looking at getting six which is fantastic for the first time against the part time sides.

“Also we look at the first quarter, obviously the start wasn’t great but our results have been very good.”
