Sons went in to Saturday’s game on a high following their 3-1 defeat of Alloa and on a run in which they had avoided defeat in the previous four games.

While that record has been extended to five Ian Murray’s men would have been expecting more out of a home tie with the Championship’s bottom side.

However Campbell concedes the disappointing performance didn’t merit more than one point, saying: “I didn’t think we played great to be honest, I think we let them have too much of the ball. I think you could say they were maybe the better team in the first half, we couldn’t really get to grips with the game.

“I think in the second half we started playing better but still not near the level we can reach. We know ourselves, we are disappointed we really should be playing much better than that, especially based on the performances in the last couple of weeks where we have played well.” In an improved second half from Dumbarton the former Morton striker had their best opportunity to score and by his own admission he should’ve scored, but the striker is his own hardest critic, demanding a good performance each week and a goal return to match.

He said: “We started creating some chances in the second half, mine included, maybe I should’ve scored and we had other chances too.

“I put high standards on myself, I like to play well in every game. I go into every game trying my hardest and hoping to score, obviously it doesn’t always work out like that but I’m hard on myself if I’ve played badly or I haven’t scored.” The upcoming run of games looks daunting for Dumbarton with four out of the next five away from home and Hibs, Hearts and Rangers their next three games.

However Campbell sees the match with Hibs next week as a great opportunity, as Dumbarton will go above the Edinburgh side with a victory, Sons lost 3-2 at Easter Road in August but were 2-0 with 10 minutes to go.

He said: “We move on to next week and hopefully put in a better performance than this week, we played well the last time we played at Easter Road and probably should’ve come away with the win. We go into every game confident we can pick up points.”
